Rose Rambler: 2nd November 2023 - Understock Growth

3rd Nov 2023

Hello Dear Rose Friends,

After an absolutely weird week of weather here in Victoria with driving wind bringing sleet, hail and very cold conditions, our roses still look stunning and are giving us every reason to smile as we walk in the gardens and around the potted roses in the nursery.

Many varieties set flowering buds well before this cold spell so they’re giving us the joy of fragrance once again … the flowers are enormous after good rain and warm sunshine as the buds were forming … aaaaah, another rose season!

MEMORY STICK FOUND IN NURSERY

… Last weekend a red covered memory stick was found. Our super-sleuth grandson, Cooper opened it to reveal family photos from 9.11.14 to 29.07.15 of Bev’s 60th birthday on 4.4.2014 and a 90th birthday on 16.11.14 along with photos of Elly and Tate 12.2.23.

If you know a family who celebrated on the above dates, or any names are familiar with persons likely to have visited us here at Clonbinane, please call us 0418 337 765 during open times – Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday 9am to 4pm or email:  info@rosesalesonline.com.au so that we can return this precious item to its rightful owner.

… Now is the time when we get customers calling to say the rose which flowered yellow last year, is flowering red this year … that isn’t possible but what is possible, however, is that the understock has started to grow – see this red flower of Dr. Huey which is widely used as understock …

Do not simply cut the branch at ground level because we all know that roses love to be pruned and the understock will grow rampantly once pruned at ground level.

You must get a very sharp knife and from under the growth, slash inwards and upwards then from above the growth, slash inwards and downwards thus removing the entire ‘eye’ then push the soil back – the wound will callous over and recover naturally.

Q: What did the blanket say when it fell off the bed?

A: Oh, sheet!
