Rose Rambler: 23rd November 2023. To Lucerne or Pea Straw

24th Nov 2023

Hello Dear Rose Friends,

Last week a rose parcel was lodged at Wandong PO at 7.30am on Monday and I received this email at 12.49pm on Tuesday …

Hello Diana, Thanks for your time on the phone on Saturday & making ordering & paying so easy.
Do you have a tracking number yet? Thank you Sandra

Before I could even respond, there was another email at 1.10pm only 20 minutes later

… Just arrived beautifully at my workplace. Thanks Sandra ?

We’ve had no issues with delayed parcels for many months now so I emailed my AusPost Manager just to say “hello” … very reassuring as we move into the busiest time of the year for sending parcels!

We’ll be posting the last roses on Monday, 18th December.

… ABOUT MULCH …

Email exchange with Karen in Brisbane –

Question for you??? What product did you prefer to mulch with
Pea straw
Lucerne
Sugar cane.
I live in Brisbane, QLD. Have a lot of roses to care for have been using sugar cane, last mulch I changed to lucerne well not sure I am liking it I have lucerne growing now. Looks like a nice lime coating under the roses. Should I redo? Regards Karen.

MY RESPONSE: YYou'll find the lucerne is actually doing a lot of great work in your soil but if you don't like it and find it too much work resort to the others ... pea straw will also give you 'pea weeds' but you pull them once and place them back over the existing mulch and they've done the task of bringing nitrogen to the roots of your roses ... is getting out and weeding too much for you? Just a bit at a time is good exercise perhaps? Cheers

Thanks Gra. I will stop feeling sorry for myself and pull them out when they appear. Thanks for the subtle nudge.

The second bag of rocky point lucerne created a lot more unwanted weeds. Which I found strange.

Regards. Karen.

MY RESPONSE … It is random! I've got an area of ?????? weed which came in a bale of pea straw so I’m leaving it until I get a moon planting/weeding guide to remove that beast - approx. 3 square metres of dense weed ... aah, well, the joy of gardening, I guess? Cheers and as you pull each weed, make as though you're getting rid of any little problems in your life ... bin them!

A giggle for you:

Q: Why shouldn't you tell a secret in a garden?

A: Because the potatoes have eyes and the corn has ears!

Meantime, enjoy the roses blooming everywhere!
