Rose Rambler: 12th October 2023. Watershoots

13th Oct 2023

Hello Dear Rose Friends,

What a week it’s been with the most glorious drop of gentle rain over two days which has nicely saturated our gardens so they are poised and ready to flower within the next few weeks – much earlier than in previous years despite the fact that we’ve still had very cold and frosty mornings.

... Every shade of green possible – the joy of our spring garden with all the deciduous trees leafing-up and providing a spectacular display. Since the rain event this past week, a big old bull-frog has been the first to wake us up each morning, closely followed by all the birds – a cacophony of joyful sounds!

A giggle for you ...

Q: Why don’t ants get sick?

A: A waist of time!

GLYPHOSATE AND ROSES

… Over the years, we’ve actually counselled couples when one, in good faith, went to spray the roses but either picked up the wrong product and just didn’t quite give enough thought to what was being sprayed or used a spray unit which was previously used for weedicide and this is a typical result …

A very old, well-loved and established Mr. Lincoln rose may never recover because it didn’t just get a ‘whiff’ of Round-Up (glyphosate), it got an absolute shower because the spray was applied to weeds on the path nearby. Problem was that there was way, way too much wind that day!

I understand that weedicide is necessary in our gardening regime but please, don’t ever, ever use glyphosate-based sprays anywhere near your roses – most especially not when there’s a breath of wind!

It’s very important here to stress that you know what your trusted gardener is applying around your garden too and that you have this conversation so the gardener knows that roses and weedicide are basically incompatible!

WATERSHOOTS DEVELOPING NOW

… In one of their most robust times of growth, roses will produce watershoots immediately after pruning and these watershoots become the new branches and structure of the rose.

At pruning time next year and each year, you’ll retain these newest growths and remove all old branches which keeps your roses looking lush and healthy.

Watershoots on climbing roses can be bent vertically so they produce masses of flowers along the branches.
