Rose Rambler: 10th August 2023 - Time to Begin Fertilising Your Roses

10th Aug 2023

Hello Dear Rose Friends,

Glorious weather here at Clonbinane, Victoria this week – lovely crisp, frosty mornings turn into the most spectacular days with clear-blue skies and a brisk breeze which means we still wear our winter woolies and jackets!

This will change very soon into warm days when our roses start to produce new shoots … time for us to get on and prune the gardens! There’s seriously never a dull moment … the weeds and lawns are growing as we watch so, no time to ponder as spring approaches quickly now.

… It’s serious business getting all these parcels to the local PO at Wandong so it’s just as well I love to drive and can pick up a coffee and snack at different destinations between deliveries! My Subi XV fits just enough parcels to make every trip worthwhile but it was great when Auspost send a truck for pickup of parcels here at Silkies Rose Farm several times this past winter and the driver had to cuddle with Mooi, of course …

“Gardening simply does not allow one to be mentally old because too many hopes and dreams are yet to be realized.”

How frequently over the years we’ve been asked “.. how quickly will that rose cover our archway?” Of course, so much depends on your rose management and it’s definitely true, what you put in, you will get out!

It’s time now to start fertilizing your garden and don’t let up if you’re growing your roses in pots! The garden will love quality organic fertilizer every 8 – 12 weeks with in-between addition of any amount of compost and mulch.

Potted roses will need to be fertilized with pellets every 4 weeks but intermittently don’t hesitate to give them liquid seaweed with added liquid fertilizer – sneak a few pellets over the pots in between too!

A giggle for you ...

Q: What fruit do twins love to eat?

A: Pears!
