ROSE RAMBLER 4TH AUGUST, 2022

Published by Rose Sales Online on 4th Aug 2022

Hello Dear Rose Friends,

We know that many of you will be excited to know that lots of roses were tagged and packed for posting this past weekend. There’s a lot to do and we want to remind you that we’re working in CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER so without being rude, ‘first in, first served’. Some customers ordered roses back in November 2021.

Some varieties are still waiting to be dug from very sodden soil. The outlook for this week is for more showers every day!

Thankfully, all our staff are healthy and up to the massive task in front of us as we pack and post roses every day. We won’t let up until the last winter order is packed and delivered to Wandong PO and finally to your address!

Can you please save our number as a CONTACT on your phone just in case you receive a call or message from us: 0418 33 77 65 is our business phone number. We definitely understand that you might be reluctant to take calls from unknown sources but this will be us needing to contact you.

We’ll try calling first and then leave a message if we need to speak to you with information about your rose order.

Some varieties of roses are smaller than we anticipated but that is because of very mild and wetter conditions than usual during past summer/autumn. Roses just love and need hot conditions to grow well!

The roots are strong so can I please remind you to trim the roses again so that they burst forth from the bud-union. Once the weather ‘hots up’ you’ll see your newly planted roses literally explode with new growth. This, in turn, will give you beautiful rose blooms throughout the coming season and years thereafter.

A giggle for you this week …

Q: Why did the caterpillar go to so many parties?
A: He was a social butterfly!

Even I’ve been seconded to work on getting your parcels of roses to you more expediently as I fill my Subi with parcels several times a day. Of course, I stop off for a coffee at my usual haunts so it’s not all hard work and no play!

A Few Tips for Winter Rose Planting & Pruning

  • When stepping around roses to prune, have some ‘biscuits’ of pea straw or lucerne to step on so you don’t compact soil.
  • Make planting holes at least 50cms wide and deep. Blend bagged compost to existing soil.
  • In clay soil, fork holes in the base and side walls of rough holes; blend clay with compost and check the drainage.
  • Soak newly planted roses to an absolute slurry and then don’t water for at least a week or more depending on conditions.
  • Pour Eco-seaweed solution over new roses at least once a week and fertilize when new shoots appear.
  • Trim your new roses by at least HALF. This is so very important!  It’s easier before planting, Just DO IT if we didn’t prior to posting!

Last Saturday, we had minus 5 frost here at Clonbinane and couldn’t get tap water until around 11 am as the pipes were frozen deep in the soil.

Frost isn’t dangerous for roses. Even your newly pruned roses will endure this winter onslaught and flourish when the weather warms up again.
