ROSE RAMBLER 22ND OCTOBER, 2020 … Hello Dear Rose Friends, I’ve just filled the wood box in anticipation of the fire being lit again this weekend, when we can expect more rain and a very wintry blast of cold weather. Of course, this sets our flowering back another week, apart from the few really early flowering old-fashioned varieties like these roses below:

Stanwell Perpetual: A superb old fashioned rose - one of our favourites because it is NEVER without flowers. Almost twelve months of flowering from this magnificent shrub rose which is an absolute delight! Shop Now!

Mme. Alfred Carriere: An old-fashioned beauty - rambling rose which is the first and last to flower each season with a continual show of informal flowers of blush creamy white with intense fragrance. The lax canes are near thornless and this magnificent rose can be grown as a free-standing shrub. Shop Now!

Mrs. B.R. Cant: An old-fashioned Tea Rose of immense beauty and amazing continuity of flowering. Here in our cold garden, she's the first to flower in spring and is still flowering well into winter - in warm climates she'll flower most of the year! Shop Now!

Potted roses and our gardens will be flowering in time for when we re-open in line with the end of Covid-lockdown … perfect timing I guess!

I finished pruning our fruit trees this past fortnight; hope I wasn’t too late? I left a lot of good fruiting spurs on and with all the rain we’ve had, I’m guessing we’ll harvest another great crop of Nashi and Pears this season.

A little giggle for today...

Q. A cowboy gallops into town on Monday, stays for two days, then leaves town on Monday. How can this be?
A. His horse is named Monday!

We’ve been receiving lots of queries about aphid control – yes, Eco-oil and Eco-neem will work when you follow the directions … It’s very important, in order to get good control over the breeding cycle, to conduct a program similar to this:

  • Spray in the morning Day 1
  • Spray in the morning Day 3-5
  • Spray in the morning Day 10-14

Between each of the sprays, observe what is happening because you may well get to Day 10 and decide there is no need for spraying because you’ve successfully interrupted the breeding cycle of the target insects.

Remember, whenever you see adult insects, there will be larval-stage waiting to mature so controlling the ‘babies’ is mastery to halting breeding!

Continue with the normal organic rose management program at least once a month and enjoy all the sumptuous rose blooms from your garden …

May the best team win the Grand Final this weekend …

Best wishes from Graham, Diana and Mooi at Clonbinane
