Rose Rambler: 11th April 2024. Ladybirds Flying to the Rescue

17th Apr 2024

Hello Dear Rose Friends,

As magnificent autumn shows the glory of her colours, it’s a perfect time to jump in the car and visit towns in country Victoria where the trees beckon you to share their beauty!

We’ll be out and about next weekend visiting Broughton Hall at Jindevic …

This area of Gippsland is very close to my heart as it’s where my Mother grew up on a dairy farm at Lillico and I remember driving there in my Dad’s car ……… the journey seemed to take forever and we were no sooner there than it was time to trek back to Melbourne.

This weekend, a visit to this wonderful area of Victoria is only two hours from Clonbinane and definitely worth the drive to share our magnificent roses to visitors at Broughton Hall – hope we see your there too!!

LADYBIRDS ARE FLYING TO THE RESCUE ...

PhD researcher, Shovon Chandra Sarkar at Murdoch University discovered that when ladybirds were introduced to the invasive tomato potato psyllid early in their life cycle, they would grow to know them as preferred prey.

The psyllid can cause severe damage in many vegetable crops which we grow in our gardens and huge economical impacts in broad-acre vegetable production so if justONE ladybird is trained into a pest-eating assassin, its entire colony might enjoy the psyllid pest as prey!

This research makes it environmentally essential that we preserve every single ladybird who visits our garden. In rose management, the ladybird may not be visible at the time when you see other rogues such as aphids.

Spraying with Eco-Oil and Eco-Neem come to the rescue by interrupting the breeding cycle of garden pests whilst leaving our predators, including ladybirds, to safely get on with their job.

HAVE A GIGGLE

Q:  Why did the apple stop in the middle of the road?

A:  It ran out of juice!

ROSE MANAGEMENT SPRAY PROGRAM ...

It’s getting to that time of year here in Victoria when our roses re starting to shut-down for winter but right up until they do, we’ll be sure to protect them using this spray …
To 10 litres of water add:

Vigorously shake all products together in a spray pack and apply liberally over the entire leaf surface to run-off. This spray can be applied over your entire garden (including indoor plants) at least every couple of months. Please note the following:

  • Ensure all products are thoroughly mixed
  • Apply spray early in the morning
  • Never spray when temperature expected to exceed 28 degrees
  • Don’t store spray once mixed – create recipe to suit your needs
  • Commence spray at first sign of insect pest/disease

Maintaining a robust, healthy garden free of disease and insect pests is a gift to our environment! Stay informed, as we do and use our highly recommended resources if/when things don’t go quite right and Mother Nature needs a helping hand in your garden …

GRA'S FAVOURITE STANDARD ROSES ...

I wish I could consult with every customer who purchases standard roses – a lot of varieties just shouldn’t be budded to 90cm stems, much less the 60cm stems!

A wonderful standard is one which has a lovely rounded shape, doesn’t shoot straight up for the stars and if trimmed constantly, produces flowers continually throughout each flowering season.

Of the selected varieties we are now offering, here are just 5 of my all-time very favourites:

POPE JOHN PAUL II
CAMP DAVID
CHARLES DE GAULLE
GOLDEN BEAUTY
ASHRAM

There are indeed lots more to select from – happy shopping!

ANOTHER GIGGLE FOR YOU ...

Q: What do you call two rows of vegetables?

A: A dual Cabbage way!

We hope you enjoy another special week of early autumn in your garden – at least there will be some daylight if you’re an early riser!

See you here at Clonbinane or perhaps at Jindevick this weekend … cheers
