Easter Planting Roses - Weeping Roses

Easter Planting Roses - Weeping Roses

Published by Rose Rambler on 21st Apr 2023

Hello Dear Rose Friends,

After Melbourne’s coldest April day in 25 years last Saturday, it was no surprise that we experienced a close-to-freezing morning here at Clonbinane with 3 degrees at 6am on Sunday morning when we could snuggle under the blankets for an extra hour to end of daylight saving!

Later in the day it was glorious so we had a family-daffodil-planting-day.

Gra and Cooper with Mooi supervising – Diana and Jason dug the holes, Ben was the photographer!

It’s that time of year when gardeners are dreaming of what roses to plant this winter but we’re still working with lots who are keen to plant while the soil is still warm this autumn … just like Bridget

I have decided to get two potted climbing roses to start with. I have chosen the Iceberg and Nahema as I think they will look beautiful on the side of the house.

Can you advise me on what I need to do to get the ground prepared for planting i.e. fertiliser, ground cover etc? Do I need a weed mat?

My response: There’s lots of information in past years of Rose Ramblers at our website www.rosesalesonline.com.au so perhaps you’ll find all the information there – no, definitely DO NOT USE WEEDMAT – worst product ever invented for garden use! Dig two lovely big holes 75cm x 75cm and add some bagged compost; ensure holes are moist before planting – great to use seaweed solution for this and then use straw/lucerne mulch to prevent weed infestation.

Plant two established POTTED roses – DON’T WATER THEM EVERY DAY but deep soak at planting and then monitor weather for necessary watering but only ever deep soak at each watering!

Hope this is helpful …

Cheers - Gra
