ROSE RAMBLER 9th March 2023

Hello Dear Rose Friends,

Autumn is one of our most favourite seasons because the eclectic display of colour in our garden is breathtaking as trees start to display their autumnal beauty.

A visit to Clonbinane is a MUST because the roses in autumn also take on a whole new look with depth of colour being extraordinary! Connecting with gardeners who attended Whittlesea Garden Expo was lovely.
A common theme that stood out with the people I spoke to was, 'how to deep-soak when watering.'

Staggeringly, those who reported their roses weren’t very well said “but we had such a wet winter I didn’t think I needed to water...” Yes, we did indeed have a wet winter but now you need to turn on the tap and deep-soak your roses so they’ll flower abundantly right up into winter!!!

As a challenge, I ask gardeners to select just one area of their garden, turn on a sprinkler and leave it until puddles form. Take note how vigorously the plants flower and flourish in that section of garden and you’ll realise that when you deep-soak your garden, you’re making very good use of every drop of water you pay for because, when your plants are flourishing, I know you’ll be very happy too!

Whoever said “you can’t buy happiness”?

One lesson I learned from this past weekend at Whittlesea Garden Expo is to know that every single gardener needs to acknowledge that EVERYTHING AND ANYTHING you do in your garden has an impact on the environment around you.

If we all take this issue on board, we can mitigate climate change. Shovel-full-of-compost by shovel-full-of-compost we will prevail together by planting a rose, a tree or veggies in your garden. That will make a difference!

The ‘new’ garden bed was almost completed this past weekend so Diana is planting her garlic crop along the standard rose border since garlic releases secretions of sulphur that is said to improve the scent of roses and all the standard roses on the walkway are indeed, highly fragrant specimens
As the garlic bulbs will be in the ground until next summer harvesting, we’ll grow a border of parsley in the same location in order to use up maximum space–I can almost taste the parsley in our omelettes and soups ... aaah!

Between the roses, I’ll be planting clumps of daffodils and other bulbs which have exponentially multiplied in other areas of the garden. Yes, I will also be sure to steer growth from the pumpkin away from the roses or perhaps relinquish this year’s crop of pumpkins in order for this lovely garden to be planted exclusively to roses.

A giggle for you ...

Q: How do brains say “HELLO”
A: With a brain-wave!
