Hello Dear Rose Friends,
As happens every season, we received most of the roses we had pre-ordered with our growers and earlier this week, a straggler, Firestar, finally arrived but we didn’t get any Slim Dusty and a few other obscure varieties which we thought might still arrive!
It’s always a challenge and we are so grateful that if there’s an issue, our lovely customers are so gracious and kind in accepting a substitute or perhaps a refund if that works under the circumstances. Thank you!
… Standard rose delivery is still causing some issues in our online store where we’re trying to explain how we need to get those lovely 90cm standard roses to you at the most economical cost … $64.50 is the minimum charge for the box which is 113cms tall and is no longer accepted by Australia Post but has to be courier delivered to you via Star Track.
In weeks to come, when our standard roses are potted, we’ll be posting them too! This is great news for many customers so please call us during business hours if you need 90cm standard roses delivered to you.
Open hours when phones are manned and we welcome you to visit Silkies Rose Farm, Clonbinane: 9am-4pm every Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
GROWING YOUR ROSES IN POTS ... PERMANENTLY ...
Plonking roses into well-prepared soil for their life of flourishing in your garden is way, way easier than having a ‘garden of potted roses’ as we know many of our customers are now doing. Here’s an email exchange with Sophie which may enlighten you to the challenges and what we highly recommend when your roses are going to be permanently in pots …
Dear Diana, Graham and Mooi (and the rest of the team), I am a new customer and purchased one of your Earth Angel bare rooted plants.
I am inspired by your dedication and amazing choice of beautiful roses!
As a new and self-taught gardener, I would truly appreciate some support with questions I have regarding the care of my new beautiful Rose plant. I need to pot it for few years before transplanting in my front garden (as the site is not suitable yet for roses).
What would be the best soil recipe/mix and ratio to use in the pot? (Regular potting mix, acidic potting mix for roses, chicken manure, regular or mushroom compost, blood and bones?) Warm regards, Sophie
MY RESPONSE … Hi, buy top quality potting media with all the goodies added and don’t add anything else in the first weeks apart from regular applications of seaweed solution – then fertilizer every 4 weeks, foliage feed in between times, deep-soaking watering every time you water the pot to make sure every single component of the potting media is dampened! You can apply a coir-fibre mat which is available from
GuardnGrow

The coir-fibre mat will provide a nice mulch over the pot, reduce weed infestation and retain even media-temperature during hot weather.
Growing roses in pots can be very rewarding but you must be attentive to your plants needs at all times! Happy pot growing … cheers
