Golden Beauties David Austin Roses
We still don’t have standard roses sorted for this bare-rooted season but there are still four weeks of winter and we promise to be in touch with you about your order by this time next week …
Correction
… in the rose rambler of 29th June, we gave the
ORGANIC ROSE MANAGEMENT RECIPE which was misprinted and should read:
To 10 litres of water add:
- 5g Eco Seaweed (1/2 of the small scoop provided)
- ¼ cup Eco oil
- ¼ cup Eco Fungicide
Thoroughly mix all powders and oil then spray foliage to run-off. Preferably apply spray prior to 10am when the stomata (pores of the plant) are open and efficacy of products is guaranteed. Never spray if the temperature is expected to exceed 30 degrees!
We urge all gardeners to thoroughly check all label directions on ALL or ANY products which you use on and around your garden!
… Lots of you will have your new bare-rooted roses planted so I’m now challenging you … did you follow our instructions and trim the roses by at least one third?
Sometimes, a customer calls to say a branch is broken in transit … great, we say because now you’ll have to trim that branch and you’ll get to understand why we recommend this harsh pruning at planting.
If you received three roses of the same variety, prune just one of them and it will prove to you how vital it is to prune bare-rooted roses at planting.
No, it’s not too late to go and do this pruning … DO IT NOW! The roses will be settled into their new home and starting to produce new shoots so they’ll show you where to prune to … be totally confident that the rose will now produce the most strong watershoots possible!
Last week we suggested that you email if there are issues … thank you for your contributions as there’s every chance other rose gardeners are experiencing problems exactly like this:
"Help ! I have just discovered one of my standard Just Joeys, the middle one of three in a row, is completely covered in a whitish substance. None of the other roses has been affected by the look of things. I have sprayed it with White Oil, and it seems to lessen the coverage however I don’t know if this is the cure, I have a bad feeling that I might lose Just Joey ☹️??"
.
My response: It sounds like scale ... Eco oil on a toothbrush works well but you have an intrinsic issue - the soil is compacted so you must get a garden fork and dig holes around the base of the rose to aerate the soil ... you'll be surprised how well this works! Do let me know how the Just Joey recovers after this simple treatment .
A giggle for you ...
Q: What time is it when ten elephants are chasing you?
A: Ten after one!
"Hi Gra and Diana, Is it possible for you to tell from the photo below whether the new growth on the left is understock or not? And if it is, what do you recommend I do?"
My response: I’m not 100% sure but it appears that the branch off to the left of pic is definitely understock – do you remember if the foliage is different to the foliage of the other branches? Either way, to be absolutely sure, I would get a saw and remove that branch right close to the understock stem … you could get right down there and with a pair of secateurs, gouge out the ‘eye’ which has potentially produced this growth from the understock. Have a go … it’s worth it if only for the adventure of saving a rose … cheers
"A PROBLEM SHARED IS A PROBLEM HALVED” … an old saying but please continue to share any issues you have with your roses so that we can share and learn from each other!
