Very soon, we’ll start to prepare the nursery for bare-rooted season because right now, roses are being dug and sorted for this coming winter …
Digging roses from the field where they’ve been growing these past 18-24 months is an arduous process … it takes many, many people and machines both out in the field digging and trimming then back to the shed for sorting, grading and labelling!
So yes, we’ve started that process and before you know it, you’ll receive tracking notification that your bare-rooted roses are on the way to your garden. I sure hope you’ve prepared an area in your garden for the lovely roses we’ll be posting soon?
Don’t delay because what preparation you do NOW, will be rewarded in years to come by healthy roses growing in your garden! There’s a plethora of information about this important process in Diana’s book ALL ABOUT ROSES so order your copy now. |

Q: How old is your Grandpa?
A: I don’t know, but we’ve had him a LONG time!
… Suckers on roses: "Hi Diana & Graham … Question: are David Austin roses grafted or not? I sometimes get suckers come up below the growth knob. Sometimes these are so strong I feel it sacrilegious to prune them off. Am I doing the right thing or can I choose what to let grow - or will I be a very sorry girl later Thank you always for your advice – Beverley"
My response: "All our roses are budded to virus-tested species rose understock (either Dr. Huey or R. multiflora) which ensures their viability, long-life and sturdy growth … can you show me what you’re referring to because so many folks get mixed up between WATER-SHOOTS and SUCKERS as it’s ever so important that you don’t cut the water-shoots but that you treat the suckers for what they are … a nuisance!
If we detect that growth on your roses is suckers, you’ll have to get down and dirty with those roses to remove the suckers from the understock or you will indeed be a very sorry girl! Cheers and thank you! Graham"
When Bev sent through a photo of her rose, we were relieved to report that her David Austin rose, ‘Heritage’ was growing healthy water shoots and definitely NOT suckers as she thought … she was most grateful and will be creating more rose garden beds! |

David Austin rose, ‘Heritage’ is a very strong-growing rose which is ideal for hedging so it’s going to produce masses of water shoots in order to prolifically flower over a very, very long season. If you’re interested in parentage of roses, ‘Heritage’ is an interesting one to check on and we usually refer to the helpmefind website when we’re researching rose varieties - there you’ll see the very popular ‘Iceberg’ is in the lineage of ‘Heritage’! |

Q: What do you get when you milk a cow in Antartica?
