Hello Dear Rose Friends,
Glorious fragrance and colour abound here at Silkies Rose Farm, Clonbinane which makes all the effort of maintaining existing gardens and planting new gardens so worthwhile!
Our potted roses are flourishing and ready to be posted so that you can create almost instant new gardens at your place – yes, it’s perfectly OK to plant potted roses at any time from now onwards …
NEVER TOO LATE TO PLANT A ROSE …
Hi, I have a spot that is very sunny and I would like to order and plant a couple of roses....do you think it is too late? I live in Beechworth and we do get a lot of hot weather.
The bare rooted Bengali roses I purchased from you a few months ago are doing well and starting to bloom. Kind regards, Meryl
MY RESPONSE: You can plant at any time of the year Meryl – just be sure that you soak the potted rose and planting hole before planting and then once planted, soak the ground to a slurry then pour seaweed solution over to reduce transplanting shock. To complete the task, a light mulch should be applied. Leave the rose to settle before more watering – a gentle soak of seaweed solution once a week will be very beneficial for the next six weeks.
Enjoy planting roses in that sunny spot in your garden! Cheers - Gra
THIS WEEKS SPECIAL
Buy the magnificent Bengali and we’ll post The Poet’s Wife for ½ price – two very complimentary roses for just $63.75 plus pack/post to fill a corner of your garden with immense fragrance and beauty!
Bengali - is a floribunda/modern shrub rose which has deservedly won many gold and silver medals around the world in trial grounds - it's one of the healthiest roses in this colour range and has a magnificent spicy fragrance.
The Poet's Wife - is a beautiful yellow David Austin rose which produces masses of large cupped blooms of a lovely rich yellow, which pale as they age and are produced in small clusters.
There’s no doubt that the garden is very rewarding at this time of year – thankfully, we have all beds well mulched with pea straw so we can walk through the gardens, pick spent flowers or get up real close and smell varieties we haven’t seen for a while. Our roses are sensational so do come for a visit if you can!

GARDEN GUARDIAN …
We have several families of kookaburras who wake us each morning then vigilantly guard our garden for snakes and we love it when we see them this close to the house on our sign which reads:
I HAVE BEGUN TO PLANT THEE AND WILL LABOUR
TO MAKE THEE FULL OF GROWING
Words taken from Shakespeare’s Macbeth which I’m sure our garden patriarch, Reg, might have studied – thank you to the customer who shared her knowledge after years of teaching Shakespeare!
A giggle for you:
Q: Have you heard of the bean family?
A: They went on holidays and ended up in the can!
Hi … I thought you might like to see my Pierre de Ronsard roses which are glorious again this year. I purchased them from you and followed your terrific instructions on how to plant your bare rooted roses. People frequently stop to take photos and I thought you deserved to see the results! Patricia
Another giggle for you:
Q: What word starts with ‘w’ and ends with ‘t’?
A: What!
Enjoy all the glory of your spring garden and share it too … our gardens are a very strong link to our health and the health of all who visit with it!
