Spring is definitely in the air here at Clonbinane – the wattles have been spectacular and now we’re seeing the first blossoming fruit trees, magnificent stands of jonquils and daffodils with our pruned roses now sprouting new shoots … it might well be an early-flowering season.

ORGANIC ROSE MANAGEMENT PROGRAM ...
now that our roses are potted and starting to shoot new foliage, we have applied the first organic rose management spray. Here’s our recipe:
To 10 litres of water, add:
- ½ scoop Eco seaweed (use any seaweed product and follow application rates)
- ¼ cup Eco Fungicide powder (formerly called Eco-Rose)
- ¼ cup Eco Oil
The most important thing is that you start this Organic Rose Management program BEFORE problems arise! Since the mix contains Eco Seaweed and Eco Fungicide powders, high pressure water is added to dissolve and blend the powders then Eco oil will be added whilst more water is used to mix all products.
Next, this solution will be sloshed from one bucket to another three or four times to be sure it is very well mixed before it’s added to the spray tank where a final blast of water will agitate the products perfectly – if you have lots of ‘froth and bubble’ you’ll know the solution is ready to use. It is imperative that the products are very well mixed together so they settle evenly on the foliage.
Over the years, it is our experience that gardeners who start the Organic Management Program as soon as foliage emerges after winter and then spray no less than once a month during spring, they’ll have minimal issues during the first flowering season.
From then onwards, it’s important to fertilize and trim the roses; remain diligent and check weather reports – if humid/inclement weather is predicted, spray more frequently and if you see pests, add Eco-Neem. This organic management program is particularly effective on insects at the larval stage as it interrupts the breeding cycle of pests like aphids.
If you only have a few roses, you won’t need to make 10 litres of spray so break-down the recipe to suit the quantity you require because you cannot store the solution. You can apply this solution to veggies, azaleas, fruit trees and lots of other garden plants where foliage disease and/or pests are present.
I would like to stress that it’s taken us years of learning to accomplish our good management practices and WE’RE STILL LEARNING! Mother Nature can throw some wide-balls and we must stay alert and diligent in caring for our garden and very especially, our potted roses to be sure they’re sent to you in absolute mint condition.
