Rose Rambler: 11th January 2024. Summer Rose Care. 2024 New Releases

14th Jan 2024

Hello Dear Rose Friends,

Welcome to 2024 which shows promise of being a wonderful year for all of us as we enjoy time outside in our gardens. We woke on New Year’s Eve to (illegal) fireworks being lit at the Hume Freeway interchange here at Clonbinane – it was 11.00pm … must definitely have been somebody from interstate who didn’t recognize our daylight-saving time! We giggled, kissed Happy New Year and promptly went back to sleep!

A giggle for you

Q: Why did the clock go to jail?

A: For killing time.

… This time of year is always a challenge for us as we spend a lot of our time discussing which roses to introduce as New Release for 2024, those we de-list because they’re not popular or didn’t meet our expectations and then there are those varieties which we haven’t listed for a while but definitely want you to grow in your garden because we know they’re magnificent!

We’re going to work on this with you all during coming weeks because we simply couldn’t do it all in one Rose Rambler.

This week, we welcome 2024 Delbard New Release Roses with these two gorgeous varieties:

Either rose will suit a perfect location in your garden – one a climber and the other a gorgeously low-growing variety! Love it that they’re both deliciously fragrant which of course, we all enjoy in our rose selections …

Bienvenue Rose

Bienvenue - from the celebrated French breeder Delbard, stands as a paragon of floribunda roses. Exemplifying robust vitality, this variety boasts an exceptional blooming capacity, unfurling an abundance of delicate pink petals that form an enchanting old-fashioned, ruffled display. Notably, Bienvenue, aptly named after the French word for 'Welcome,' is renowned for its unparalleled disease resistance, ensuring a hardy and long-lasting presence in any garden.

Dolce Vita

Dolce Vita - whose name translates to 'Sweet Life' from Italian, is a horticultural treasure that bursts forth with enchanting pink buds. Those buds gracefully unfurl into a lush apricot heart, evoking warm, joyful hues of a serene sunset. This Delbard creation captures the essence of its namesake, offering a visual feast that delights the senses.

Another giggle for you:

Q: What do you get if you cross a four-leaf clover with poison ivy?

A: A rash of good luck.

SUMMER ROSE CARE …

If it’s been wet and humid where you live, most importantly, trim all spent rose blooms as quickly as you can so they’re not rotting on the bush!

Now is a great opportunity to do a full summer-prune of your roses by trimming all stems by at least 1/3 and once the pruning is completed, don’t hesitate to give each bush a good handful of quality organic fertilizer around the root-zone and definitely use the organic rose management program spray program (see past RR’s) when weather permits.

It's imperative now that all garden beds are covered with mulch because despite thinking this summer is mild, it’s going to get really hot soon and any protection you offer the worms, microbes and all living organisms in the soil will benefit your garden for years to come.

We use and highly recommend lucerne and / or pea straw for preference but anything you use which is sourced from your local area will be very beneficial – dried animal manure, broken-down eucy mulch and your own home-grown compost is excellent! (Remember to cover compost to ensure all the great microbes are protected from burning-off in hot sun as they’re an immensely useful component in your garden.)
