HELLO DEAR ROSE FRIENDS ...

Welcome to autumn which is the most spectacular season in our gardening calendar when all the colours are vibrant and it’s a positive joy to be out in the garden.  We hope you make time to come and visit Silkies Rose Farm sometime soon because our roses are so healthy and ready to be planted in your garden this autumn.
 
 
There’s absolutely no doubt about the magic of a garden through autumn.  Very soon our ornamental trees will colour all the burnt, beautiful yellow/orange/red whilst the colours of our rose blooms will intensify to show their ‘true’ colour – this is a great time to get out and about your neighbourhood / local garden centre / public rose garden to photograph roses and select which varieties you would love to have planted in your garden.

If you struggle with identifying certain roses, here’s what to do –
  • Take a close up photo of the flower
  • Take a close up photo of the foliage – this is very important!
  • Take a distant shot of the whole bush
  • Take a sniff and try to describe the fragrance

Hi please tell me why roses … even in rose gardens… do NOT have any PERFUME these days.  Thanks. I am only interested in beautifully perfumed roses. 
Diana responded:  Come for a walk in our rose nursery - NOT when the temperature is hot, freezing cold or frightfully windy but on a balmy day ... step out of the car and feel like you've been sent to heaven ... cheers!

It’s very common to hear customers say they’ve lost their sense of smell after they contracted Covid 19 but perhaps it’s a condition enhanced by age … as we age, all those sharp senses we enjoyed during our youth will most definitely be declining.

Due to vision impairment, I recently had cataract surgery and can drive with confidence as I see now as well as I did when I first started driving!  My best mate wears a hearing aid and we enjoy chatting without concern for him not hearing well.  

Is there such a ‘fix it’ for those who incur loss of smell?  Also to consider is that we all have different levels of olfactory sense.  Diana and I are frequently challenged about the fragrance of rose blooms – I have a more heightened sense of smell than Diana and yet I’m older than her by 15 years.  She smoked until 15 years ago … has that impaired her sense of smell?  

All very interesting and we still highly recommend that if a rose flower stops you in your tracks and you would love to grow it in your garden, DO IT because at some time of the flower opening, in the right conditions, it will emit fragrance!

(I’m excited … for the first time in nearly 15 years, one of my Silkie hens is sitting on a clutch of eggs so we’ll have Silkie chickens soon.)
