Hello Dear Rose Friends,Today is Sinterklaas in Holland and I have such fond memories of happy times shared with family during my years there … it’s time to get the Christmas tree decorated and ready for the exciting family time of Christmas in Australia!
thanks to all of you who continue shopping on our website – so sorry that it just didn’t work out as planned this last weekend but we’ll continue to offer specials in coming weeks …
We had to postpone the SUMMER ROSE CARE SEMINAR due to extreme weather conditions. As soon as we see a clearing in the weather, we’ll reschedule but it definitely won’t be this weekend as there is more rain predicted. We’ll contact those who booked as soon as possible.

Yes, it rained all day on my birthday, 30th November and it was thrilling to see our son, Eric (a true ‘plantsman’ who owns a magnificent garden at Romsey), gasp when he saw this amazing specimen of Hollyhock – I planted the seed two years ago and it has been worth the wait to enjoy it this year …
Eric put his name down for seed and if you would like some seed from this beautiful plant, please email: info@rosesalesonline.com.au and we’ll pop your name on the list and post seed as soon as appropriate.

Q. Why was the loaf of bread upset?
A. His plans kept going a rye!
INTERESTING SITUATION TO USE DEAD TREES TO SUPPORT CLIMBERS …
I have four pencil pines two of which have now started dying, I have trimmed the trunks of dead material so now I want to cover the still stable but bear trunks with some beautiful climbing roses.

Would you be able to advise me the best options, I would prefer white rises partnering with a suttle pink rose.

Thanks,
Michael
My response …
Firstly and definitely foremost you must dig some decent holes at the base of these dead conifers and enrich the soil with loads of compost forked into the soil at the base … the more you put in and do watering with seaweed solution, etc. the sooner you’ll be able to use the trunks to support a climbing rose but it won’t be tomorrow!!!!! This might take a few months even … perhaps aim for autumn planting – always great for climbing roses because they establish well prior to winter and then by spring you have an established climbing rose!

I’ve done this before so speak from experience and if you follow these guidelines, you’ve got a FREE support for your climbing roses! See pic of my Cedrus atlantica ‘Glauca Pendula’ which was planted on a dead tree in our gardens after 2009 Black Saturday bushfire … even if the dead tree became unsupportive, my beautiful memorial plant would now be self-supporting due to its size.

Hope this encourages you to use ‘free’ climbing rose supports in your garden and I would love to see photos when the roses are flowering!

Cheers

Q. What’s the best thing about a bread joke?
A. It never gets stale!
