Edition 16th January, 2024

Hello Dear Rose Friends,We wish you a very happy, healthy and rosy 2025 – we’ve missed being in touch these past four weeks and our roses have missed being visited and enjoyed by you whilst they’re looking their absolutely beautiful best!

We let “Morticia” (Jason) loose in the nursery just prior to Christmas after all the parcels had been posted – he loves to cut the potted roses right down and now, of course, after a few lovely rain events, warm weather, fertilizer and our regular organic spray management program, the roses look absolutely stunning when we open for gate sales again tomorrow, Friday, 17th January at 9.00am and we’ll continue our normal open times – FRIDAY, SATURDAY, SUNDAY AND MONDAY, 9.00am – 4.00pm.

SUMMER ROSE CARE DEMONSTRATION – THIS SUNDAY, 10.30 – 12.30 – we hope to see you for a great day out!
We thoroughly enjoyed these past weeks – coming and going at all times of any day but also staying home and enjoying reading a book or clearing out clutter that’s been meant to be done. I found this …
“God made rainy days so gardeners could get the housework done.”
- Anonymous
How true is that? We all know how there’s an almost magnetic draw to visit the garden rather than mop a floor! So, one rainy day during our holidays recently, I cleared a section of my office and found this Rose Rambler ‘sample’ from 2005 … read on …
I hope you scrolled through those pages from 20 years ago when Diana typed the Rose Rambler and took it to our printer for reproduction. Then our kids would take boxes of the RR, envelopes and pages of address labels home so that in the evening, they could fold, envelope and label each document ready for posting. Initially, yes, we used to pop a stamp on the front as well!

When we discontinued posting the Rose Rambler in 2012, there were 5,000 which had to be folded, labelled and a sticker was used to seal the folded document for posting as we no longer used envelopes or stamps but we could still hear our kids grimace when the quarterly RR was ready to be posted! It became a family ritual … nice memories!

Since 2012, when we moved home to Clonbinane and brought the rose nursery here, we set the Rose Rambler up to be emailed and from inception to now, we share this joy of gardening and information about roses with more than 15,000 subscribers so you can be sure you’re never alone and we hope you continue to email us so that we can share your experiences with other rose gardeners – info@rosesalesonline.com.au

Q. Why do penguins keep fish in their beaks?
A. They’re short on pockets!
PERFECT TIME TO PLANT POTTED ROSES …
In past weeks, we’ve done quite a bit of renovation around the gardens and found this is perfect timing for planting potted roses. Especially, of course, if you’ve prepared an area with lots of compost and you’ve got quality mulch to aid in keeping the soil temperature even as the weather gets hotter.

Before planting, ensure the potted rose is thoroughly saturated and then once planted, wet the soil to a slurry and pour seaweed solution over the plants to reduce any transplanting shock. Continue Fair Dinkum Seaweed Gold weekly – just a good douse from a watering can and you’ll have a magnificent display of rose blooms right up to winter – don’t wait, do it NOW! Roses absolutely LOVE this hot weather!

We hope to see you this weekend as we re-open for another year of service to you rose lovers …

… cheers from Diana, Graham, Mooi and the crew at Silkies Rose Farm.
