Hello Dear Rose Friends,
Yes, we finally got there! Flowering abundantly both in the nursery and gardens but gosh, at the winning post, it was a struggle for our poor roses with a few seriously devastating frosts when they all had lovely fresh foliage and buds …
There’s really nothing to learn from our experience with these very late frosts – we are out of control and no matter how healthy our roses are, they were subjected to freezing conditions right when they were about to flower. It happened several years ago but not quite as bad as this time! Ah, well, they’re all flowering now so make sure you plan a visit soon.
HAVE A GIGGLE ... Q. Why don’t tigers like fast food? A. Because it’s too hard to catch … funny! |

There was so much going on last week, we didn’t have the opportunity to show pictures of the National Rose Trial Ground Awards where our dear friend, amateur rose-breeder, Laurel won several awards for her fabulous rose … GREAT BALLS OF FIRE … |
|
The National Rose Trial Ground is in the Botanical Gardens in Adelaide where we caught up with Laurel to visit her magnificent rose when we found a ‘sport’ on ‘Great Balls of Fire’ … see bottom left corner of this picture |
|
Immediately we sighted this, Laurel’s daughter Ky shrieked “goodness gracious” so we’ve organized to have material from this amazing rose ‘sport’ to be propagated and we hope it’s a resounding success because the fragrance and beauty is amazing! We’ll keep you posted as this unfolds in years to come. |
|
Meantime, GREAT BALLS OF FIRE will be available in winter, 2025 and GOODNESS GRACIOUS, if all is successful, will be available in winter, 2026.
Whilst in the gardens, we saw the rose we have entered for trial – it’s also a ‘sport’ and it looked amazing compared to others in the same bed so it’s a hopeful new release in years to come …
This is the first picture taken when the red sport was found in November, 2023 and that single stem with the red rose on it, was sent to the grower – there were seven plants and they’re all now in trial grounds around Australia! |
|
When this lovely rose is ready to be registered, we need to give it a name so if you have a thought of what you would like to name it, please email: info@rosesalesonline.com.au and we’ll put all of your suggestions aside for future use. We may well run a competition or perhaps sell the naming rights if the rose is awarded in 2026.
It all seems a long way off but look how quickly this year has gone! We’ll be checking in at the Adelaide Botanical Gardens a couple of times each year and if you’re in the area, please do go and take a look at our rose in Bed 51 and Ken’s in Bed 53– we’d love to hear from you if you are there. |
