EARWIGS ON ROSES …
Hi Graham and Diana, for the first time in 30 years I have earwigs in my Iceberg roses! How do I get rid of them and why do you think they have decided to visit? J

Kindest Regards,
Jill
My response …
Well Jill, it’s been one of those seasons I guess! We’ve had lots of customers with various issues on their roses … our only issue here is we’ve experienced freezing cold mornings – thankfully, it’s warming up now!

Earwigs … folks put part filled beer bottles around the base of plants so the earwigs go in for a swig and drown … only solution I have other than that is to clear around the edges of your garden beds where they are hiding … sorry I cannot be more helpful.

Please don’t use anything lethal … oh, and if it’s standard roses, you can smear a layer of petroleum jelly around the base of the roses – earwigs won’t walk through the jelly!

WHAT’S GOING ON HERE?
I regularly visit Yea and the roses at the Hospital are amazing so when I received an email from Peter, here’s what I recommended –
Hi Graham, I’m one of the gardeners at Yea Hospital. A few of the older roses are showing a variation in their leaves. Variegated yellow leaves in patches, the plant looks quite healthy but the flowers aren't as big as previous years. I've attached a photo.

It this because of a lack of water? We've had a dry Spring
Hi Peter … please get Yates Trace Elements powder and apply as per directions. Obviously, not during hot midday weather but that, along with applications of seaweed solution will solve this problem. It’s not mosaic virus!!!

Chlorotic foliage can happen during spring when the roses push growth very quickly and they run out of puff … I also recommend you fork the ground about 30cms away from the main stem of each rose – jiggle the fork back and forth around each bush about four different locations and pour seaweed solution with added fertilizer – I would highly recommend our new products, Fair Dinkum Seaweed Gold and Bloom Boom – available at Mitre 10 and larger garden centres … extremely good!!! Please let us see pictures in a few weeks …
HAVE A GIGGLE ...
