Hello Dear Rose Friends,
Freedom at last! We’ve felt so enormously grateful that we live where we live and haven’t endured these past months of Lockdown but please know that we have cared about you all!
We are thrilled that you can, at last, come for a visit if you live within distance of Silkies Rose Farm – 60kms due north of Melbourne GPO within 1Km of the Hume Freeway interchange at Clonbinane!
NURSERY OPERATING TIMES:
Friday, Saturday, Sunday & Monday 9 am – 4 pm
Phones are manned during open times only. Emails are responded to within 24 hours. Kids are welcome, dogs on a lead, please.
Since the Melbourne Cup is one of Victoria’s Premier Events, let’s get talking about horses.
Now, if I owned a horse, I’d call her ‘Maggie’
If I owned two horses, I’d call my second horse, ‘As Good As It Gets’
And if I owned three horses, I’d call my third horse ‘For Your Eyes Only’
I don’t own any horses, don’t bet on the Melbourne Cup but I will be keen to take a look at the names of horses which are running next Tuesday. Wouldn’t it be a hoot if one of them was named after one of my favourite roses?
Hope that you win if you have a bet. You might even win enough to buy all three of those gorgeous roses!
THE PERFECT GIGGLE THIS WEEK:
Q: What’s black and white and eats like a horse?
A: A zebra.
CLIMBING ROSES NOT FLOWERING
"Hi, I purchased two Guinea roses from you last year. They have put a huge amount of growth on, but haven’t looked like flowering at all. The rest of my roses, including other varieties purchased as bare rooted have flowered continually throughout spring and summer. I have included a photo for your attention. Could you please advise whether this is normal? Kind regards - Dee"
In March 2021, I responded: Hello Dee .. perhaps you don’t subscribe to our email Rose Rambler … we discussed this very topic last week … it’s quite normal so don’t prune the roses heavily and you’ll see abundant flowering all seasons from here onwards … hope this is helpful .. cheers, Gra
Finally, the roses flowered:
"Hi, I wrote to you earlier in the year regarding my Guinea roses not flowering. I am happy to say they have flowered like crazy this spring. They are planted on the western wall of a tin shed and at times are subjected to some pretty ferocious winds. Kind regards - Dee"
One last laugh to share with friends around your BBQ this weekend:
Q: What do you get when you cross a black bird with a madman?
A: A raven lunatic.
Have a great week in your rose garden – enjoy the long weekend! Cheers from Gra, Diana, Mooi and the chooks at Clonbinane …
