ROSE RAMBLER 23RD APRIL, 2020 … Hello Dear Rose Friends as we travel this journey of a pandemic together, connected in the spirit of our gardens! Please know that Gra and I are here if you need some assistance – we’re responding to email just like this when you place an order like Jennie did but don’t quite know how to get things sorted for winter planting …

"Thanks Diana, looking forward to it. I haven’t grown a rose before- what is the best things to do to prepare its spot? Our soil has a lot of clay. Kind regards Jennie"

Hi Jennie … dig a nice hole 75x75cm and pop the clay into a wheelbarrow where you can blend it with compost. Fill the hole with water to see how quickly it dissipates … if it’s really, really slow, add some gypsum, seaweed solution and put clay blend back in the hole – turn this every couple of days – you could put some mulch over too. Water at least 10 litres of seaweed solution/water over the hole once a week – it should be ready for planting by the time you get your rose – if not, then pot the rose into a 20cm pot and plant when soil is ready. Cheers

Here's a short video of how Graham fills a watering can and then pours it over pots – just exactly the same as you would do over an establishing garden; especially great when poured over new plants/seedlings to ensure they get the very best start!

Q. What do you do if a dog chews your dictionary?  A. Take the words out of his mouth!

Hi - to 10 litres of water add:

  • 1/4 cup Eco-Fungicide (same product different coloured label)
  • 1/4 cup Eco Oil (insecticide which also acts as surfactant)
  • Eco-seaweed powder or your preferred seaweed brand added to mix.
  • Vigorously shake to mix all products and pour or spray over foliage to run-off.

Hope this is helpful but do understand that since we've had incredibly humid conditions with colder nights, it's now inevitable that rose foliage will incur black-spot, yellow and eventually drop from the roses - we expect that from here on in.

Q. Where do you buy presents for cats on their birthday?  A. In a cat-alogue of course.
