Hello Dear Rose Friends,
Could this weather be any more appropriate to sit at home and watch movies or football? School holidays and kids will be indoors while it’s too wet to be outdoors building cubbies and doing all the things kids do on school holidays… May the best team win this weekend when we’ll be open as usual!
It remains sopping wet here at Clonbinane and I’m getting emails from lots of customers about how wet it is around their place too… Very difficult to enjoy time in the garden and in the meantime - of course - the weeds will grow rampantly but hey, just as this past winter was difficult, as soon as the sun shines, we’ll enjoy our spring/summer gardens as we always do.
We are so sorry to all the wonderful volunteers who organised events for gardeners this past weekend… Next year has to be better!
By this late in September the nursery would look stunning with lots of pictorial rose labels flapping in the breeze, totally organised and poised for spring flowering… This year is a tad different and it all makes sense really, because we haven’t even concluded winter bare-rooted orders yet.
There are still hundreds of roses needing to find their home in a 20cm pot!
In the meantime, it continues to rain and we have such a deep admiration and respect for our wonderful team of workers that we refuse to pot roses in the rain; just wait and see though, we’ll get there eventually and all those roses will still flower in November as planned.
A giggle for you …
Q: What do you get when you cross an alien and a tea party?
A: Flying saucers!
Very interestingly, when the sun shines intermittently, it’s actually quite HOT and we find ourselves constantly changing our clothes – jackets and scarves on one minute, stripping down to t-shirts the next minute. Thankfully, we’re all well and you can be sure that at every opportunity, we’ll be potting roses!
Due to the delay in potting, I’m making an Executive Decision and offering this one last rose bundle of bare-rooted roses for 2022…

Rose Care During Spring
If you haven’t already applied the organic rose management program over your roses, now’s definitely time to start!
To 10 litres of water, add:
- 1 scoop Eco-seaweed (or follow ratio of your seaweed product)
- ¼ cup Eco-fungicide (previously known as Eco-rose)
- ¼ cup Eco-oil
If you have infestation of aphids/other insects, add Eco-neem as per instructions on the pack – it won’t interfere with predators which you may or may not see visible.
Of course, if you only have a few roses, don’t make up a 10 litre quantity of spray but break the recipe down to suit what you need! You cannot store the spray once thoroughly mixed but you can spray this solution over all your fruit trees, veggies (even seedlings) and most other plants in your garden to protect them from any insect and fungal issues.
This season might be worse than previous years due to incredible humidity so fortnightly application will be beneficial for lush foliage – remember, the more health foliage, the more flowers you can expect your plants to produce.
Remember too that you must always spray early morning and never during the hottest part of the day because this organic rose management program contains oils which could potentially burn foliage.
Please read the directions on all packs of ANY PRODUCT which you use in your garden… I’m sure you don’t take any breakfast cereal from the supermarket shelf without reading the contents…?
Treat your garden to the same diligence. ALWAYS KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU’RE APPLYING TO YOUR PLANTS; read labels and follow instructions!
One more giggle ...
Q: Why can't you win a fight with a dictionary?
A: It always has the last word!
We hope you have time out with your children these school holidays, enjoy all the moments and be sure to share some of that precious time in your garden together…Cheers from the team at Silkies Rose Farm, Clonbinane.
