All About Roses
Firstly, so very sorry to those who dared venture to Camberwell Garden Club last Thursday as my presentation was cancelled due to the incredible weather event.
Staying home meant I was able to watch the Sunday Creek flood to levels we’ve not seen in the 23 years we’ve lived here; we are safe and our home, gardens and nursery were spared inundation.
Our hearts go out to those of you who have been impacted by this massive rain event and you can be sure, if you let us know when you’re recovering a flood affected garden, we’ll contribute a rose/s to assist in the re-creation of your rose garden!
Many phone calls and emails are from customers needing advice about what to do if their roses remain saturated at the root zone for lengthy spells so here are some tips:
- Don’t apply mulch until the surface is noticeably dry
- Fork around each bush about 30cms away from the crown
- Ensure there’s adequate ventilation around each bush
- Apply fertilizer prior to adding a layer of mulch
- If foliage is leggy trim constantly to retain bushy shape
- Use organic rose management program at least fortnightly
When your roses produce lots of healthy foliage, you’ll be rewarded with lots and lots of blooms – more foliage = more flowers!
If, due to extreme moisture, foliage is affected by fungus and consequently falls from the plants, give the roses a trim by at least one third, another light feed and don’t hesitate to spoil your plants with regular doses of seaweed solution.
It’s going to be tricky to know when to start deep-soaking the roses once we get lovely warm days – don’t be complacent but rather be very mindful that the soil will possibly dry out very quickly. Stay vigilant and if you think the roses need water, always give them a deep soak!
A giggle for you ...
Q: What do you get when you cross a turtle and a porcupine?
A: A slowpoke!
