I published the wrong day in last weeks Rose Rambler. Thank you to all of you who emailed and alerted us … truly appreciate your attention to detail!
This past weekend, between rain showers, Diana and I planted herbs in large planters around our kitchen garden and along the driveway outside the office. It was lovely working together and deciding where to position herbs for easy access, flowering summer annuals, and strawberries for the grandchildren to pick.
The only thing we forgot to do because we were interrupted by another shower of rain, was to deep soak the newly potted plants!
This is a HUGE issue. Whenever you plant something new in your garden, it is most imperative that you ‘soak to a slurry’ that new plant. After planting your soaked newbie, a slosh of seaweed solution over the entire area gives you the confidence to leave the new plant to get settled without attention for at least a week in most weather conditions.
Fortunately, due to very cool and inclement weather conditions, those newly planted herbs and annuals we planted last Saturday happily survived the night and were eventually deeply soaked on Sunday and I’ll do regular applications of seaweed solution during the coming weeks.
Just because it’s raining doesn’t mean our gardens, especially newly planted roses, are being adequately watered!!! It’s difficult for us to determine how much/how frequently we recommend you water your rose gardens because we all live in different climatic conditions. It's best that you be diligent with your watering. Along with a good layer of mulch, understand the conditions of your soil and water your rose garden accordingly.
A QUICK GIGGLE THIS WEEK:
Q: What did the mayonnaise say to the fridge?
A: Shut the door, I’m dressing!
PREPARING FOR CHRISTMAS ROSE ORDERS
We have been advised by Australia Post that they’ll guarantee delivery of our roses for Christmas gifting if they’re posted by MONDAY, 13TH DECEMBER so please note this date as we will definitely be shutting down posting after this date. Our beautiful roses don’t deserve to be stranded!
After Christmas/New Year, we’ll start posting from January 10th, 2022. That may seem miles away but truly, it isn’t!
CLIMBING ROSES TO SCREEN ANYTHING UNSIGHTLY
Most roses lose their foliage in winter however, some roses are so densely foliaged that they retain masses of flowers and foliage for more than 9 months each year, and depending on weather conditions, they’ll be a great screen on your fence or wherever you plant them in your garden!
Remember with climbing roses – YOU’RE THE BOSS. You train them, prune them and manage them to grow how you want them to be and these three are sensational for dense cover.
RENAE - One of the most beautiful climbing roses because it is thornless, hightly fragrant and blooms continually throughout the rose season. This magnificent climbing/rambling rose is suitable for most situations but will offer the most glorious delight where it might enjoy a lovely warm and slightly sheltered location. 'Renae' makes a most spectacular weeping rose specimen.

PINKIE, CLB. - Is a very highly recommended rose which produces masses of mid-pink clusters of blooms continually from season start to end and everywhere in between. The foliage is lush and healthy and the whole plant creates an impenetrable screen in a very short growing period.

SEAFOAM - An extremely versatile rose - plant me, give me space and I will adorn 3m by 3m of ground - I'll grow on a mound, I'll grow up a wall and I'm beautiful as a weeping rose specimen. I'm ok where you want a thorny rose which produces flowers throughout a very long flowering season without any need for special care or attention ... I'm highly recommended!

Of course, there are lots of other climbing roses which will do the job of proliferating in the space where you need cover in your garden.
Enjoy all the glory of your rose garden in this amazing spring! Cheers from Gra, Diana, Mooi, and the chooks at Clonbinane …
