Remembering Australian Rose Breeder Bruce Brundrett

Hello Dear Rose Friends,

Australian Rose Breeder extraordinaire, Bruce Brundrett, passed away last Saturday. I took this photo at the National Rose Trial Grounds Awards presentation in 2018 when Bruce won an amazing number of trophies.

Many gardeners will remember purchasing roses from Brundrett Roses at Narre Warren – some of the first roses we supplied in 1986 at Silkies Gardens Rose Nursery, Kilmore, came from Brundrett’s … the rest is history!

A memorial service will be held next Thursday, 24th November at Berwick Church of Christ, 432-446 Centre Road, Berwick at 1pm or you can access www.tobinbrothers.com.au for the livestream.

To say this season is a challenge is an understatement – our roses are begging for some warm sunny days so they can do their normal spring flowering but with summer around the corner and cold days of less than 15 degrees with lots of rain, the potted roses are struggling to produce lush foliage and flowers.

We are still confidently posting potted roses because we’ve kept our organic rose management program happening and hope you’re doing the same. It’s most important to fertilise all garden beds every 6-8 weeks to ensure your roses continue to retain healthy foliage.

Strong, lush and healthy foliage will ensure long-lasting, large flowers.

Sustainable Gardening Australia – Master Class

Manage & Harvest Your Weeds – Mon 28th November, 6pm (AEDT) via Zoom

"With all the rain, your garden will be growing really well, maybe even doubled in size. That jungle may be made up of your vegetables and your plants, but you'll have experienced a surge in weed growth as well.

This masterclass will talk about garden weeds, the different types and the approaches you can use to remove them efficiently and effectively whilst minimising the impact on your local environment. Not only do weeds have propagation and growing superpowers, but they are jam packed with nutrients. Learn how you can unlock these nutrients and use them to feed your garden or safely consume them yourself."

The class is $28 and you can book online.

Thanks again for supporting SGA who support us all by sharing their knowledge and great gardening information!

We’ll keep you posted about progress but you can be sure, if the sun shines on the State Rose Garden, we’ll be there too…

Another giggle ...
