ROSE RAMBLER 26TH MAY, 2022

Published by Rose Sales Online on 26th May 2022

Hello Dear Rose Friends,
As we say goodbye to this glorious autumn and welcome another ‘rose season’ with magnificent bare-rooted roses arriving at Silkies Rose Farm this week.

This is just a start. There are a lot of roses expected to be processed this winter so please be patient and know that we’ve got a great team of workers, a brilliant ordering system in place and your roses will be handled with lots of love and care until they’re in your garden for ongoing enjoyment!

There isn’t a great business without a great team. I’d like you to know who we have on the team to get this season of roses posted to you, accomplished in the most friendly and happy place.  Our team this year in no particular order are:

  • Diana: She’s your ‘go to’ if you want a garden designed and she has an encyclopedic knowledge of roses and their traits.  Diana does the computer, manages orders, types like the wind, handles all issues of small business management and loves, loves, loves what she does at Silkies Rose Farm.
  • Benjamin: Our son who loves roses and can expertly manage every aspect of our business with a most friendly and caring disposition.
  • Janelle: She lives close by in Clonbinane. We met three years ago at our local Community Centre. I needed a hand so she said she’d be pleased to come and help me for a couple of days. Just this past week, Janelle said: “they are the longest two days of my life” as since then, she’s been here nearly every Monday and Friday for the past three years!
  • Jason: He is a retired Chef who enjoys every aspect of working around the roses and gardens here at Silkies Rose Farm. He packs and sends your roses and tends our gardens with absolute love and care.
  • Dione: Reliably rocks up every winter to sort, label, pot and do all the things necessary to keep our roses nurtured through the processes of winter and helps ensure our roses get safely to you.
  • Stacey: She's our (dentist) niece who, due to Covid-19 worked the past two winter seasons. She can’t wait to be part of the action again this year when there’s a mortgage to pay and not much else to do on weekends!
  • Mooi and Graham: Mooi, our beautiful toy poodle Mooi and myself, Graham, are the entertainment factor!  We love to be with customers and like it or not, though we may not appear to do a great deal of work about the place, we’re a very important and intrinsic detail of Silkies Rose Farm!

A giggle to make you smile...
Q:  What is a plumber’s favourite instrument?
A: A leek!

Managing Weeds

Managing weeds is always an issue, even in a pocket-sized suburban garden. A dear lady mentioned recently that she’s 100% sure she never uttered a swear word before she became a gardener and was frustrated with weeds. Tomorrow and Saturday are the last two days of this month which are ideal to remove weeds according to the Moon Guide!

I believe that getting ‘down and dirty’ on my hands and knees for a session of weeding makes my heart really sing and clears my head!

This leads me to share some stats which may inspire you too:

  • Gardening could help you live to 100 and beyond.
  • A nutritious plant-based diet, daily exercise and social interaction are extremely important to reduce stress and increase positive mental health/well-being/attitude.
  • An hour of planting/weeding/pruning/mulching in a garden EVERY day, achieves the required amount of cardio work and stretching to remain physically fit.
  • Disease tolerance seems to be improved by wielding a spade and rake.

Some gardening chores do become physically exhausting as we get older and it would seem easier to give up. I urge you to measure time in your garden. Don’t overdo it and try to inject some funny ideas into a repetitive job. Count how many steps it took to walk to the compost heap then count how many shovels it took to fill the barrow. Listen to music whilst gardening and meantime, remember this silly joke and share it with as many as you can.

One last joke for today:
Q. What do you get when you cross a knife and your front lawn?
A. Blades of grass!
