Climbing Roses Not Flowering in Season

Hello Dear Rose Friends! We’re sending thoughts to those of you who might have been inundated by recent rain events along the east coast. It’s magnificent when you get a great dump of rain on a garden but inundation can cause serious damage.

If you ever have a sodden garden bed that cannot drain quickly, try the following steps. You’ll be amazed at how well the roses recover!

  1. Lift the roses.
  2. Trim roots and tops to between 10-15cms.
  3. Plant them into 20-30cm pots with quality potting mix.
  4. Soak regularly with seaweed solution.
  5. Fertilize monthly.

Replant into the garden once the drainage situation has been rectified. This recommendation applies absolutely ALL YEAR and IN ALL EXTREME EVENTS WHICH CAN DAMAGE A ROSE GARDEN – fire, flood, drought or simply because a rose must be re-located for whatever reason.  When you work with your head and your heart to make the rose survive, it usually responds positively!

A little giggle for you this week:
Q. Why do dogs run in circles?
A. Because it’s hard to run in squares!

CLIMBING ROSES NOT FLOWERING IN the FIRST SEASON

This past week we’ve had a few emails about climbing roses failing to flower prolifically despite growing beautifully. I’m sure you’ll gain valuable information to store in your file about climbing roses …

This picture shows healthy foliage, ideal location and if you look closely, there are flower buds ready to burst forth for autumn however, these climbers didn’t flower during summer and Christine asked why …

"I think recent, consistent heavy rain is the culprit for massive growth at the expense of flowering – it’s one or the other sometimes, especially with climbing roses!

I haven’t personally grown Kiss Me Kate yet but I do know that a lot of climbing roses will flower early, put a whole lot of growth on to firmly establish themselves in a particular location and then flower prolifically over all that growth in the following flowering season. I urge you to NOT prune heavily this season.

"I also recommend that climbing rose canes to strapped laterally to induce flowering. Be creative with your climbing roses and don’t hesitate to mechanically prune them by shearing them close along the frame which supports them whether it be sideways or up-and-over as in an archway. See this magnificent display of Bantry Bay over an arch in our garden."Once established, you can pretty much do what you like and ‘be the boss’ of the climbing rose because those established canes will flower throughout the seasons. Mechanical shearing works well after a few years of established growth!"

I had to laugh when one of my mates told me this:
Two old women were sitting on a park bench waiting for a bus which was running late.  Finally, one woman turned to the other and said … “You know, I’ve been sitting here for so long, my bum has fallen asleep” … the other woman turned to her and replied:  “Yes, I know, I heard it snoring!”

Keep a smile on your face and see the sun behind the clouds … come for a visit to Clonbinane soon! Cheers from Graham, Diana & Mooi
