Fragrance of a Rose

ROSE RAMBLER 10TH DECEMBER, 2020 Hello Dear Rose Friends, we now count-down to Christmas, with tomorrow being the last day you can order potted and flowering roses from www.rosesalesonline.com.au to be guaranteed delivery in time for Santa …

What glorious weather it’s been and how spectacular are our rose gardens? WOW factor around every corner, on every street, in every park – between us all, we’ve made Australia a rose garden!

There’s no doubt that fragrance in roses is exceptionally important and we try to give very accurate descriptions in our online store and Rosarian Magazine for how WE perceive or experience the fragrance of the roses we supply.

I’m sure every single one of you have faced similar challenges as this customer …
"Hi.  I purchased quite a few bare rooted rose this year online.  I ordered them from the description and photos that I saw online.

My questions is, the roses I purchased were described as being highly perfumed, yet I can hardly smell a scent at all.  Is this because they are very young and this is their first year, or is it because they simply are not highly scented roses?

Maybe there is something I can add the regular fertiliser to increase the fragrance?  Kind Regards … Dawn"

Sometimes, after postulating about the enormous fragrance of a particular rose, I take a customer to that rose and for whatever weather event or other reason, the flower appears to have little or no fragrance at that particular moment …?  So, I wrote this response:

"Hello Dawn .. this is always a tricky one!  Some roses intensify in fragrance in the heat, others lose their scent completely – some love wet/cool weather and then there’s the fact that as we get older, our olfactory senses diminish!  If you take a bloom and hold it in the palm of your hand for a few moments, it’s sure to exude some fragrance …???

We don’t lie in the descriptions and they’re our own personal experiences … Diana and I are always challenging each other when it comes to particular fragrance of our roses and no amount of fertiliser will enhance fragrance in your roses!  Cheers … Gra"

Your weekly giggle ...

Please enjoy all the moments in your garden during this busy lead-up to Christmas when we’ll all take a well-deserved break to spend time with family and friends after Covid-19 lockdown.
