ROSE RAMBLER 31ST MARCH, 2022

Published by Rose Sales Online on 31st Mar 2022

Hello Dear Rose Friends,
The first month of magnificent autumn is over already. We can feel it in the cooler evening and definitely colder mornings when it’s still dark at 7am and we’ve already been up for a few hours.  We’ll be glad to see the end of daylight savings so that we can get outdoors a little bit earlier.

I tried to water the potted roses by moonlight one morning last week. It didn’t work well!  It won’t be too long now and we might not want to be getting up too early on the freezing winter mornings so we'll enjoy the lovely autumn weather whilst we can.

JOKE THIS WEEK:
Q.  There are ten cats on a boat.  One jumps off, how many are left?
A.  None, they were all copycats!

I wish all gardeners were copy cats and do what I’m doing right now across all areas in my garden. I am distributing quality compost and fertilizer, covering with mulch and watering in with Eco-seaweed.

My bulbs are starting to push through and I know if I cover all garden beds during autumn with this TLC, our trees and roses will be better able to tolerate the potentially freezing conditions during winter. Go on, be a copy cat!

FERTILIZING ROSES IN RAINY CONDITIONS

"Hello Rosie Folk, We are having torrential rain, constant and interspersed with quite heavy downpours, it is my thought that using liquid nourishment to my potted roses is a waste of time and energy, yes?

Should I just stick with 'solid' fertilizer, blood and bone and potash, pellets, Black Grit (from Vasili), etc. as they are less likely to wash away?  In anticipation of an informative reply, Regards.. Barbara"

My response:  Because of the incredible amount of rain still falling along the east coast, I believe it’s imperative that you maintain both liquid and pellet fertilizer as soon as practicable because yes, indeed, lots of valuable nutrients will have washed through the soil / potting media and your plants will appreciate regular fertilizer to recover.  Remember, Eco-seaweed solution is not fertilizer but rather a tonic to relieve stress and nurture plants!

REPOTTING ROSES

"Hi. I was wanting to know if I could re-pot my roses into bigger pots instead of in the soil? Would they still do well in much bigger pots? Thank you for your help. Lucy"

Hi Lucy, if it’s time to repot your roses that have been in the same pot for say, two years or more, you can re-use existing pots by cutting the roses back to their almost original size!

Yes, cut the tops and the roots evenly to the same length, soak them in seaweed solution for an hour or so and then pot them into fresh potting media and soak them with seaweed solution at least twice a week for a few weeks after transplanting.

Of course, you might prefer to have new varieties in the pots so plant the roses you have into an area of your garden using the same method as above.

As winter approaches, now is an ideal time to transplant and move plants around your garden. They’ll settle in well before it gets too cold!

Q.  Why are roses bad cheerleaders?
